Flooding

Mental health experts say that the risk to flood victims now is isolation, stress, and being overwhelmed emotionally (Steve Reilly, Press & Sun-Bulletin).

There are free tentanus shots today and this weekend at the Oakdale Mall for Binghamton-area flood victims (Jennifer Micale, Press & Sun-Bulletin).

FEMA is coaching the expectations of capital region flood victims, warning that few will be "made whole" by relief funds (Chris Churchill and Yi-Ke Peng, Times Union).

Defense firm BAE Systems says it will reopen in the Binghamton area, despite flooding at its plant (My-Ly Nguyen, Press & Sun-Bulletin).

State Senator Tom Libous appeared on Capital Tonight to talk about how flood victims can protect themselves (Maureen McManus, State of Politics/Capital Tonight).

The attorney general is planning to travel the state to help victims figure out how to apply for help (Nick Reisman, State of Politics).

The governor announced a loan fund to help local governments repair their water facilities - but the sum available, $25 million for the whole state, is the estimate to repair just Binghamton's sewage plant (Nick Reisman, State of Politics).

Business advocacy group, Unshackle Upstate, wants the governor to ease contracting requirements to help with flood clean up (Maureen McManus, State of Politics/Capital Tonight).

The fallout at fracking sites from flooding seems minimal (Donald Gilliland, Patriot-News).

But Pennsylvania had no way of knowing what was happening at drilling sites as flood waters rose - because there's no requirement that companies communicate conditions on the ground to regulators (Scott Detrow, State Impact PA).

Natural gas and energy

A lawyer for the drilling company that's suing the Town of Dryden over its fracking ban refused to comment on the suit (Matt Richmond, Innovation Trail).

The Water Board in Niagara Falls is moving forward with a plan to treat fracking wastewater (Michael Wooten, WRGZ).

Josh Fox won an Emmy for Gasland (because it aired on HBO, it was eligible) (Scott Detrow, State Impact PA).

A state senator says plans to build wind turbines in the Great Lakes are caput (Tom Precious, Buffalo News).

Speakers at the Buffalo "Business of Energy" conference laid out the conflict about adopting renewables: going green or coughing up cash (Matt Glynn, Buffalo News).

Jobs and money

The head of PAETEC spoke in public for the first time, after announcing the sale of the firm to an Arkansas company, putting big plans for a downtown headquarters in doubt (Zack Seward, Innovation Trail).

Rochester has one of the strongest economies in the nation, according to reports released Thursday (Diana Louise Carter, Democrat and Chronicle).

Job growth, particularly in construction, is also strong in the Buffalo Niagara area (David Robinson, Buffalo News).

New York has picked up $55.4 million from the federal government for small business lending (Thomas Adams, Rochester Business Journal).

Higher education

A mystery building rising at the University at Albany will double the size of the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (Larry Rulison and Chris Churchill, Times Union).

RIT's pot of research dollars fell in 2011 (Nate Dougherty, Rochester Business Journal).
