Today in your Morning Trail Mix:

Political reporters weigh in on Cuomo's latest legislative performance.

More on hydrofracking and the natural gas boom.

And: Rochester CEOs keep seeing their salaries go up.

Politics

As Michael Gormley of the Associated Press sees it, the new Albany, where politicians focus on getting along, means the hard decisions are being left untouched.

Danny Hakim of the New York Times notes the risks for Gov. Andrew Cuomo as he tries to add on to early successes like equal marriage rights, a property tax cap and the on-time budget.

A group started by Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes will work with the Cuomo administration to push for publicly financed elections (Thomas Kaplan, New York Times).

Economy

The average salary for CEOs in the Rochester area was $2.64 million in 2011. That's a 3.5 percent increase over 2010 (Matthew Daneman, Democrat and Chronicle).

Niagara Falls has seen a boost in tourism income because of tighter family budgets and tougher border restrictions. Local officials hope that Nik Wallenda's recent tightrope walk over the falls will add to the momentum for years to come (Charlie Specht, Buffalo News).

Property tax appeals are nearing a record high this year in New York City (Sally Goldenberg, New York Post).

Natural gas

The editorial board at the Syracuse Post-Standard has deemed Cuomo's plan for hydrofracking in New York a "reasonable step."

In a collaboration with Innovation Trail, the Pittsburgh-based radio program the Allegheny Front took a long, hard look at the promise and peril of the natural gas boom.
