Obama was originally planning to speak at GlobalFoundries. But as Politico's Maggie Haberman points out, "the optics of visiting a center owned by a foreign government would invariably have become an issue for the White House raised by his critics and the GOP."
Hey, Albany: Get your errands done before noon. From 12 to 3 p.m. a 2-mile stretch of the Thruway and a handful of local roads will be closed (Associated Press).
Obama is a one man stimulus: Gov. Andrew Cuomo thinks the president's visit could boost the region's economic development efforts (John Eligon, New York Times).
Obama's visit is like a snow day: Construction workers at the NanoCollege are getting two days of paid leave (Larry Rulison, Times Union).

"The Southern Tier is quickly becoming a research hub for solar energy" (Matt Markham, WBNG).
The Southern Tier could also become a hub for natural gas development. The Innovation Trail's Matt Richmond has a rundown of the latest natural gas news.
Syracuse
Another $39.2 million is being sunk into cleanup efforts at Salina's Ley Creek. Cleaning up after General Motots is expensive (Mark Weiner, Post-Standard).
