Workers at Lockheed Martin sites in central New York and the Southern Tier are being hit with another round of layoffs, but the company says the move is not tied to the government shutdown that just ended.
A total of 600 workers across the country will be out of a job early next month, according to the defense contractor.
Just how many staff in upstate New York will be affected isn’t currently known. The layoffs are in Mission Systems and Training, the same unit that lost 139 workers in the Syracuse area and Owego in August.
The company again blamed uncertainty in the industry.
"This action is necessary to address continuing challenges in our business environment, including continued uncertain program funding, delays in contract awards and an extremely competitive market," said spokesman Keith Little in an email.
The layoffs are independent from the affects on the company from the two week long government shutdown, which caused the defense contractor to furlough some employees.
The workers affected by this layoff will be notified on Nov. 6.
