New York's senators have secured nearly $3.8 million in federal funding for new high-tech manufacturing public-private partnerships in Syracuse and Rochester.
In Syracuse, $1.9 million will go towards a new Thermal and Environmental Control Systems Cluster Accelerator, according to a release from Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, both Democrats.
The project will be run by Syracuse University.
Rochester is receiving almost the exact same amount for a Regional Optics, Photonics, and Imaging Accelerator. It's a project of the University of Rochester, NYSTAR, and High Tech Rochester Inc.The grants will boost small and medium-sized manufacturing and increase training for high-tech manufacturing, according to the senators.
Here's what Sen. Gillibrand had to say in a written statement:
It’s time to see ‘Made In America’ again starting right here in New York. When we harness the full potential we have right here in [upstate] New York, we can spark more growth in clean-tech and high-tech manufacturing by strengthening our businesses and attracting new businesses with our highly skilled, highly trained workforce, and create more family-supporting jobs right here where we need them the most.
The money comes from the Advanced Manufacturing Jobs and Innovation Accelerator Challenge run by the Economic Development Administration. The money to upstate New York is part of $20 million announced yesterday.
There were ten partnerships announced in all.
