Cuomo briefs on Sandy preparation

Office of the Governor

Governor Cuomo, gave a briefing earlier flanked by representatives of a range of state and federal agencies including the Army Corps of Engineers, says that he is confident all preparations are being done in anticipation of landfall by Hurricane Sandy. His main comments are available in this story and you can view Karen DeWitt's report at WXXI News.

The briefing heard that storm surge levels are already matching the levels seen with Hurricane Irene.

Director of New York State Operations Howard Glaser reports that the main issue for New York harbor will be expected high tide/storm surge combination between 8-9pm EST tonite, when there is the possibility of an 11.7 foot surge PLUS tide with a full moon.

Surges along the Battery Park shoreline pose strong risks to that part of the city's subway system where salt water, if it floods into the subway, causes major damage to switches and signaling installations.

An additional 1,000 National Guards have been called up in addition to the same number on Sunday.

Cuomo also says that navy assets across the state will be deployed downstate.

In closing remarks Cuomo emphasized that the state had received 'extraordinary' support from the federal government.
