Autism spectrum disorder, better known as autism, is a condition where an individual struggles to engage in two-way communication, especially in social situations.

There is no "cure" for autism, and the cause may come down to hundreds of interacting factors, but we do know it is critical for people with autism to get the earliest possible diagnosis and get access to appropriate educational and medical resources.

Many families with children with autism describe leaving high school as a ‘falling off a cliff’ - because of the lack of services when they become adults. Add to that, a complicated and intimidating job hunt. Despite the obstacles that people with autism face trying to find work, a new, dedicated job fair in Rochester, New York may be the first step to help that community find employment.

A new study suggests that there may be a link to exposure to air pollution and developmental disorders like autism.

Dr. Dr. Deborah Cory-Slechta is Professor of Environmental Medicine at the U of R Medical Center and lead author of the study.

She says when newborn mice were exposed to air pollution -- especially ultrafine particle pollution -- there was an enlargement in the parts of the brain that is seen in humans who have autism and schizophrenia.

Researchers in upstate New York have developed a wearable sensor system that will help toilet train autistic children. The device, created at the University of Rochester, involves a moisture pager that can connect to a smartphone app and alert caregivers to accidents.

It’s exactly what it sounds like. ‘Wearable technology’ involves sensors that are worn in something like a bracelet, that gather information and send the data to a computer via bluetooth.

This technology is now being developed for use across a range of health-related applications. New research suggests that it could be used to help prevent seizures in people living with epilepsy.
