A new $80 million addition to the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus (BNMC) will further consolidate the region’s health-related services.
The announcement of the mixed-use 350,000 square foot structure is and end-of-the-decade cherry-on-top for the rapidly expanding BNMC, a mix of public and private enterprises focusing on medical procedures, research and manufacturing.
The building will serve a number of needs, housing a diagnostic imaging center, office space for private physicians’ practices, and first floor retail space.
Anchoring the campus’s western edge, the glass building was designed to provide a welcome to the sprawling BNMC from Main Street. Right now, the site is a parking lot.
Planners also see the structure as a further boon to the neighborhood, which has seen more new activity and investment in the last 10 years after decades of little investment. The Buffalo News calculates that the project is the largest Main St. investment in 21 years.
Women and Children’s Hospital will also relocate its surgery center to the building. Its current location on Elmwood Avenue is outgrowing its space, with more than 14,000 operations performed a year.
A sky bridge or tunnel will connect the new structure to Buffalo General Hospital, the O.T. (original tenant) of the medical campus.
Design work on the building stayed local, with architecture firm Kideney Architects credited for the striking plans.
