Several regions win big at Regional Economic Development Council awards

Each region was given a portion of $715 million in state money for economic development.

There were several big winners amongst the state’s Regional Empire Development Council, as five walked away with more than $80 million each, during the third annual set of awards announced Wednesday.

Regional Economic Development Council awards for 2013

Economic development awards totaling nearly $716 million were announced at an event in Albany Wednesday. The figure is down slightly from $738 million awarded in 2012. It's the third year for the allocation of regional economic development funding under the Cuomo administration. 

The awards format, with it's 'we're all winners' mantra was predictably upbeat and slick. The event kicked off with a light-hearted, and uncharacteristically moderate, video appearance by comedian Lewis Black.

N.Y. incentives and subsidies still lack evaluation and oversight

New York state spends about $7 billion on tax incentives and business subsidies each year. Regional Economic Development Councils, or REDCs, were put in place in 2011 to help coordinate this spending at a regional level.

North Country REDC gets crash course on Fort Drum's impact

Joanna Richards reports from Fort Drum on the most recent meeting of the North Country Regional Economic Development Council.

The North Country Regional Economic Development Council or REDC, held its most recent meeting at Fort Drum last week. The idea was to give members from the region's seven counties greater insight into how the Army post interacts with the local economy. The council also took steps to implement a new program for water and sewer project infrastructure.

Cuomo reacts to IDA backlash on sales tax budget proposal

During his visit to western New York on Thursday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo reacted to the backlash by Industrial Development Agencies (IDAs) against his executive budget proposal that would remove their powers to grant state sales tax exemptions.

In recent weeks IDAs across New York state have been pleading with the governor to rethink the proposed change. They argue it will strip them of their ability to manage local economic development projects.
