A conference aimed at providing support to computer programmers is coming to Buffalo.The Nickel City Ruby conference will bring together people from around the world to discuss the perils and pleasures of the open-source programming language called Ruby.
Husband and wife duo Nick and Amanda Quaranto are organizing the meeting. The event’s designed to providing coders with support, mentorship, and networking opportunities.
But, with so many program languages out there, why is Ruby worth dedicating two days worth of discussion to? Well, for one thing says Nick Quaranto, the Ruby languageis one of the easiest ways to tell the computer what you want it to do.
“It’s very close to English. It’s very clear, it’s very concise. It is not like what you would see in a movie with a bunch of stuff flying across the screen. It’s very descriptive, it’s very easy to understand. It’s focused on the human first, instead of the computer first,” says Nick Quaranto.
Nick Quaranto says Ruby also helps many programmers get projects done quicker. Amanda Quaranto says coding isn’t for everyone, but they’re always encouraging people to learn a coding language.
“Something that I want to work on is getting more unemployed people working towards this. Just because you don’t have a college diploma doesn’t mean you can’t do this. It’s not easy, but in a few months you can be at a point where you can go get an internship and go get a job doing this,” says Amanda Quaranto.
The conference features 15 guest speakers. It will take place on September 20th & 21st at the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library.
