Natural gas

Following the flooding caused by recent tropical storms the Department of Environmental Conservation is planning to update the contours of its 100-year floodplains - and to prohibit hydrofracking in those areas (Steve Reilly, Press & Sun-Bulletin).

North Carolina is the latest state to debate whether or not to allow hydrofracking (Emery P. Dalesio, AP).

Pennsylvania's governor, on the heels of proposing a fee on gas drillers, says the state needs to offer other perks so that drillers will invest in natural gas infrastructure for cars (Mary Wilson, WHYY's Newsworks).

Jobs and the economy

Congress is set to vote tomorrow on legislation that would help with retraining for workers whose jobs were sent overseas (Brian Tumulty, Gannett).

Speaking out

College radio stations will protest the recent trend of university's selling off broadcasters to help meet tight budgets - by going off air for part of Tuesday (Mary Beth Marklein, USA Today).

Governor Cuomo doesn't take a position on the Occupy Wall Street protests, but does say that the right to protest is "what makes a democracy work" (Azi Paybarah, Capital New York).
