N.Y. offers free tuition to STEM scholars

Some high school students could earn free college tuition by majoring in certain science and technology fields – and promising to stick around New York state after graduation and work in such fields.

The New York State Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Incentive Program application is now available for high school students entering college in the fall, according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office.

The program provides a full State or City University of New York tuition scholarship to students in the top 10 percent of their high school graduating class if they major in a STEM field and work in a STEM job in New York state for five years after graduation.

"The STEM Incentive awards not only give this state's top high school students access to a first-rate education, but it ensures that they and their talents remain in New York to help build our burgeoning high-tech economy," Cuomo said in a statement.

Applications must be submitted by Aug. 15 for June high school graduates planning to enroll in college this fall.

There are several eligibility and application requirements; details about those and more information about the program are available at hesc.ny.gov/STEM.
