Another 80 employees at Lockheed Martin's factory in suburban Syracuse, N.Y. and 65 in Owego, N.Y. have been told they're out of a job in the second round of the layoffs to hit the sites this year.

The plan to reduce the workforce in the defense contractor's Mission Systems and Training unit was announced on Oct. 16. In all, 587 workers lost their job in the unit nationwide.

In August, 139 employees were terminated at the two locations.

The layoffs are "necessary to address continuing challenges in our business environment, including continued uncertain program funding, delays in contract awards and an extremely competitive market," spokesman Keith Little said in an email.

Last week news emerged that Lockheed Martin was close to shuttering the entire plant near Syracuse, which will now employ about 1,600 people. After Sen. Charles Schumer stepped in, those plans were tabled for at least one year.

Lockheed Martin has been operating at Electronics Park in Salina, N.Y. since 1996. The company has an economic incentives package that requires it to employ at least 1,500 people. After these layoffs, which will go into affect Nov. 20, the Owego site will still have about 2,600 workers on staff.
