Remington Arms' owner breaks silence on state's gun laws

The owner of the Remington Arms factory in upstate New York has finally made a statement about the state's strict gun control laws, calling them unconstitutional, nearly four months after their enactment.

On Tuesday a message was posted on the company's Facebook page that states while the gun maker is not happy with the New York SAFE Act, the company will not abandon its workers.

"While we are unhappy with the misguided acts of our elected politicians, Remington will not run or abandon its loyal and hard working 1,300 employees without considerable thought and deliberation," the company writes.

A plan for a Syracuse homecoming by opening a new business

Frank D'Agostino has his eye on a mostly vacant storefront in the Armory Square section of downtown Syracuse. It's a big part of his grand plan for a Syracuse homecoming.

"Dagsly," as he’s known by his friends, aims to open a computer service and repair store in the space, hoping to capitalize on the growing residential population downtown.

"People are moving back into Syracuse in droves and they’re going to need a place to bring their stuff when it gets busted," he reasons.

'Buy local' promoter to hold local economy summit in Syracuse

A promoter of the buy local movement in Syracuse will hold a regional summit next month to promote local business and encourage entrepreneurs to set up shop.

Syracuse First announced The New Economy Summit at a press conference Monday. It will be held May 22 at the Genesee Grand hotel in Syracuse.

Dave Pasick moved back to his family’s farm just north of Utica a few years ago, naming it Szaro Farms, after an old family name.

Last year, behind the old barn where a silo once stood, he found plants climbing up the side of its old frame.

"They were all over the barn and we were like, 'oh man, those are hops,'" Pasick recalls.

The Southeast University Neighborhood Association has been fighting back against an invasion for decades.

"We’re not squeamish about living with students," says Michael Stanton, head of the homeowners association, known as SEUNA. "The thing is that, if the current trend continues, there won’t be any families. In a matter of years, they’ll all be replaced by rentals."
