Lake Ontario water levels cause concern

The water levels in Lake Ontario have a significant impact on the economic and environmental viability of harbors in upstate New York and Canada. As a result, a proposed plan to change the management of those water levels has raised some concerns in waterfront communities.

The International Joint Commission (IJC) regulates the water levels on the lake, and for years they’ve argued that the priorities have swung in one direction.

Dave Pasick moved back to his family’s farm just north of Utica a few years ago, naming it Szaro Farms, after an old family name.

Last year, behind the old barn where a silo once stood, he found plants climbing up the side of its old frame.

"They were all over the barn and we were like, 'oh man, those are hops,'" Pasick recalls.

Entrepreneurs in western New York have a wider range of potential sources of capital than ever before, according to the Upstate Venture Association of New York. A panel moderated by Innovation Trail focused on the new funds in the Rochester region.

Panelists representing four of the key funds in the area spoke about the particular interest areas of their funds ranging in scale from $1 million - $7 million.
